To a traveler making the journey from Harrisburg to San Felipe, in the 1830's, the 2 foot high prairie grass rippled in a light wind and looked like waves on a vast sea. Occasional clumps of trees and bushes appeared to be islands in this sea. One of the larger island composed of pine trees and underbrush was a landmark in that vast sea that they called the "Pine Island".
