The first European, Alonso Alvarez de Pineda made his way along the Texas coast in 1519, exploring and bringing it under the Spanish Flag.
In 1682 Robert Cavelier, Sieur de la Salle claimed the area as part of Louisiana and brought it under the flag of France until 1690 when Spain destroyed the French settlement and Texas was back under the Spanish flag.
In 1821, Iturbide led a successful revolution and Mexico became an independent country and Texas came under the new flag of Mexico
Chafing under new laws imposed on the colonists by Mexico, a revolution led by Sam Houston finally succeded in beating the Mexican army beside the San Jacinto River and ran them out of Texas in 1836 and Texas became an independent republic under it's own flag.
In February 1846 the Republic of Texas became the State of Texas in the United States of America.
In March of 1861, the State of Texas secessed from the union and joined the Confedracy and came under the flag of the Confederate States Of America. After the Civil War ended in 1865 Texas once again came under the flag of the United States of America.
