THE PHILLIPS FAMILY
On August 2, 1860 Joseph William Phillips and Elizabeth Jane Snow, both born in Georgia, were married in the state of Alabama. Joseph was born in 1841 and Elizabeth was born August 1, 1841.
Joseph's family had emigrated from England. After arriving in South Carolina they migrated to Georgia, Alabama and finally to Grimes County, Texas in 1873 after the Civil War. Eight years latter they moved to The Shiloh area in Waller County. Joseph was a Civil War Veteran and a prisoner of war held by the yankees until 1865. Elizabeth died in 1895 and Joseph married a woman named Fannie, two years later. He died in 1920.
They had nine children, five born in Alabama, Sarah Dorcas, Narcissus A., Artie Mae, James Marion, Joseph Fleamon and four born in Texas, William Shelly, Thornton Sylvanus, Ella Jane and Effie. They also raised a grandnephew, Thomas Quinn Whigham as a twin to their son Thornton. Most of the family is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery.In the 1900 census Joseph Fleamon was living in Pine Island and listed as the head of a household and living with him were the following brothers and sisters, William Shelly, Thornton Sylvanus, Ella Jane and Effie.
JOSEPH FLEAMON PHILLIPS
Joseph was born January 18, 1872 in Alabama and died on November 21, 1957. He married Georgie Electra Garrett who was born April 10, 1876 and died June 18, 1946. Georgie was the half sister to Silas Austin Garrett and sister of Susan Jane (Garrett) Milam, Benjamin and Franklin Garrett. Joseph and Georgie had four children, Earl, Hattie, Nina and Vada.
EARL PHILLIPS
Earl was born in 1904 and died in 1975. He married a girl named Violet.
HATTIE SUE PHILLIPS
Hattie was born circa 1908. She married Dan Adams and they had two children,
Dan and Gene .
NINA PHILLIPS
Nina was born February 11, 1911 and died in 1974. She was married (1st) to a
man named Cleveland and they had two children.

THORNTON SYLVANUS PHILLIPS
Thornton was born November 14, 1876. On November 24, 1901 he married Lucy Ann Milam, born February 29, 1884, and together they had ten children, Silvan Austin, Molly Myrtle, Joseph Milam, Blanche Elza, Fannie Lucille, Benjamin Lee, Alta Oleta, Effie May, Ethel Maude and Beryl Thornton.
Thornton was an ordained deacon in the Pine Island Baptist church as was his son Sylvan and his two grandsons Freddie and Ray Brumlow. Lucy died May 10, 1959 and is buried in the Shiloh Cemetery.
SYLVAN AUSTIN PHILLIPS
Silvan was born March 12, 1903 and died November 15, 1970. He remained
unmarried.
MOLLY MYRTLE PHILLIPS
Molly was born January 1, 1905. She married Jessie Frank Brumlow and they
had 4 children, William Thornton, Freddie Francis, Jesse Ray and Donald Neil.
JOSEPH MILAM PHILLIPS
Joseph was born November 29, 1906. He married 1st. Lois Lynch, 2nd. Ollie
Prichard and 3rd. Effie Alexander. He had three children, Jeannie, Dolores and
Judy Lynn. Joseph died on November 1, 1988.
BENJAMIN LEE PHILLIPS
Benjamin was born December 6, 1908. He married Jewell Chaddick.
BLANCHE ELZA PHILLIPS
Blanch was born March 11, 1911. She married Murphy Lee Urquhart and they
had two children Virginia Ann and Betty Jane.
FANNIE LUCILLE PHILLIPS
Fannie was born January 5, 1913. She married Edgar Lee Throgmorton and
they had one child, Mary Lucille.
ALTA OLETA PHILLIPS
Alta was born March 24, 1915. She remained unmarried.
EFFIE MAY PHILLIPS
Effie was born July 27, 1918. She married Harvel Doyle Seale.
ETHEL MAUDE PHILLIPS
Ethel was born March 6, 1920. She married 1st. Charles Grebe and 2nd. Mike
Mingus. She and Mike had two children, Mitchell Jr. and Marilyn.
BERYL THORNTON PHILLIPS
Beryl was born August 18, 1921. He married Joyce Singh and they had four
children, Neil Edward, Lorraine, Ralph and Sheryl Annette. Joyce was a "war bride" from New Zealand. She died July 29, 1988.
ELY RANDALL
The Randalls were one of the four black families living in Pine Island in 1910. Ely was born circa 1880. His wife Lietha was born circa 1881. They were both born in Texas. Ely was listed as a farmer and Lietha was listed as doing laundry for private families.
JOHN C. ROAN
John was born in September of 1847 in Louisiana and his wife Sallie was born in April of 1847 in Tennessee. In 1900 only one son John was living at home. John was born in August of 1878 in Louisiana. Another son James lived next door.
JAMES ROAN
James was born in March of 1872 in Louisiana. His wife Ella was born in January 1879 in Texas. They had one child with them in 1900, Ethel who was born in December 1899. Ella stated in the census that she had had three children but only two were still living. In the 1910 census James had married Mattie (census stated they had been married 10 years) and they had three children, Louis, Ollie and Lula
DUNCAN D. ROBERTSON
Duncan was born September 23, 1874 and died October 18, 1903. His wife Mary J. was born in 1891 and died in 1928. He built the first house, store building and post office at the old Houston highway and Cochran Rd. and was the first Prairie View postmaster. He lived there with his wife and daughter. The "A History Of Waller County" states that he left the county after the sale and was never heard from again, however he and his wife are both buried in the Shiloh Cemetery, he in 1903 and her in 1928.

John and his wife Clara, along with one baby son, moved into the old Lay place (east of the postoffice) sometime after the 1910 census. John worked for Prairie View college.
WILLIAM SLEDGE
William was born in September of 1827. His wife Cordelia was born in November of 1830. Living with them in 1910, was their grandson Edward E. Sledge.

Edward was born in June of 1887. His wife Atna was born circa 1991. In 1910 they had one son, Eugene who was one year old.

Robert was born in July 1854 and Epsy, his wife was born in December 1864. In 1910 they had four children, Allie M.,Levi, Zana and Hettie. They also had two children, James and Robert Anthony, by her first husband.

Edgar was born in 1879. He married Jessie/Tillie Garrett, born circa 1887, and they had two children, Claude Harris and Marie. Edgar was a school trustee for Pine Island. He was killed in a car wreck near Waller in 1934 and was buried in the Hempstead cemetery.

JAMES TAPSCOTT
James and his family was one of the black families who moved into old Pine Island in the 1930s. He was born -----. He married Gertrude -----. James and Gertrude moved into the old Lay place after the Scotts moved to Fairbanks, Texas.
Gertrude was the closest neighbor to, and a very good friend of Mamie Milam and her children. Mamie depended on the Tapscotts in many ways after Mamie's husband died leaving her with four small children. Mamie's children, Lucille and "Buster", still speak fondly of Gertrude and how good a friend and neighbor she was to their family.
THE TAYLOR FAMILY
William Taylor, the first known ancestor was born in Virginia, but by 1786 he was living in North Carolina. It is believed that he was an uncle of president Zachary Taylor. William had five children including Jonathan who moved to Mississippi where he operated a very large cotton plantation with 100 slaves. After the end of the Civil War two of Jonathan's sons, Baldy Washington Taylor and Ruben Sanders Taylor migrated to Creek Texas near Crockett. With them came Ruben's son Francis Marion.
Francis had married Martha Jane Starnes in Mississippi. Francis was 30 years old and Martha was 16. Francis fought with the Mississippi Regiment during the Civil War, but after the war was over they moved to Creek, Houston County, Texas in 1870. Francis died in the epidemic of "1896" and is buried in Creek. After he died, Martha left seven of the children, Lillie, Ida, Effie, Francis Marion, Aggie Mae, Emmitt, and Mattie in Houston County and with daughters Dolly Pauline and Aquilla, moved to Pine Island where sons Luther Calvin, Homer Sanders, Frank Vernon lived.
FRANK VERNON TAYLOR
Frank was born in 1885 and died in 1966. He married Mantie Mae Milam on April 9, 1916 and they had seven children, Frankie "Tookie" Mae, Charles Gordon, Mary Louise, Alene Verna, Mattie Lee, Frank Frederick and Melba Jane.
HOMER SANDERS TAYLOR
Homer was born circa 1875 and his wife Pearl (Jenkins) was born circa 1878. Both were born in Texas. Homer came to Pine Island from Houston County and Pearl from Huntsville. In 1910 they had three children, Herman Lee, Minnie Inez and Mattie Sue. Living with them was Homer's brother Frank born circa 1887 and his sister Cora born circa 1892.

Aquilla married Albert Lee Garrett and they had five children, Douglas, Rachel, Wessie, Christine and Ray. "Quilla" died December 31, 1979 and Lee died April 16, 1943.

Rudolf was born in 1871 and died in 1961. He married Oris who was born circa 1872. Oris stated in the 1910 census that they had been married fourteen years and had seven children but only four were still living, Oris, John, Julia and Walter.

GEORGE WALLACE
George born circa 1854, his wife Minnie F. born circa 1868 and a cousin Elmer Denden were living in Pine Island in 1910. Minnie joined the Pine Island Baptist church during a revival held by Brother Sellers from Weimar and was baptized in 1912. They were neighbors of J.F. Phillips and William H. Milam. William Wallace Milam (William H.'s son) was named for the Wallace Family. George was from Scotland and his wife and her parents were from Texas. George died in 1925 and he and Minnie are buried in the Hempstead cemetery.

Louis was born circa 1850 in Tennessee and his wife Texanna was born circa 1859 in Alabama. In 1910 they had a ten year old girl, Wella Halsum from Illinois, living with them as a lodger. Both Wiggins are buried in the Hempstead cemetery but no dates.
